Eye Tracking for Volvo Automotive Testing

Challenge

To study visual behavior in a realistic setting, Volvo needs an eye tracking system ready for accurate use inside and outside of the car. To drive as usual, participants need to feel comfortable wearing it.

The team also seeks to synchronize the eye tracking data with various car data to get a full picture of driver interaction.

Solution

Volvo chose SMI Eye Tracking Glasses to record drivers’ visual behavior in their test scenarios. Participants have to drive in intersections repeatedly while performing cognitive tasks.

With the SMI plugin for DeweSoft automotive measurement equipment, eye tracking and car data are automatically synchronized in the Dewesoft software – with up to 1 ms precision and even over multiple vehicles.

With SMI’s eye tracking glasses, Volvo is able to track a driver’s attention over the entire dynamic driving environment. The eye tracking system captures drivers’ interaction with cockpit interfaces, but also reactions to events outside the vehicle.

While automatic synchronization of eye tracking and car data helps to understand how visual information influences the way drivers maneuver the car (important e.g. for NHTSA Distraction Guideline testing).

In the analysis software, the eye tracking data is mapped on key objects in the scenario, e.g. other vehicles or objects in the intersection.

This data is then compared with the synchronized car performance data to gain a better understanding of how driver behavior changes when mentally loaded.
