Eye Tracking a Mobile App for Nurses

Challenge

The “care viva mobil” mobile application supports nurses in their daily work. The challenge was to explore the app's usability to help nurses deliver better clinical care.

Solution

SMI Eye Tracking Glasses were used to study the eye movements of participants and to assess the positioning of information, interaction processes and the wording of elements more specifically.

Various scenarios and specific tasks were created to test the functionality of the application:

• Reading the current customer data and care instructions.
• Displaying the route to the customer.
• Recording the activity for a customer visit.
• Creating a voice memo.

SMI Eye Tracking

In this usability study, SMI Eye Tracking Glasses 2.0 with 60 Hz Eye Tracking captured eye movements as well as the field of view of users in real time.

Benefit

Eye tracking supplied information about the perception of the various functions and about the application page layout. This visual data was especially helpful in analysing the naming of interactive elements.

In general, the tests showed that the app could be used intuitively and that important information, such as care instructions and contact data, were easy and intuitive to find.

Eye tracking revealed in detail potential improvements that would perhaps not have been noticed in interviews or tests with “thinking out loud.” Eye tracking is therefore an important complement to other usability methods, such as contextual inquiry.

Background

The “care viva mobil” mobile application supports nurses in their daily work. The application is used for route calculation and navigation to the customer, time and task logging and wound documentation, which is possible directly with the application using the camera function of a smart phone.

The target groups were made central to design and development from the beginning as part of a user-centred design process (UCD). The various phases of a UCD, i.e. planning – understanding – defining – designing – evaluating, were performed iteratively. Usability methods, such as interviews, contextual inquiry, personas, scenarios, sketching and prototyping, should ensure that this application is effective, efficient and pleasing for users in everyday use.
