Remote Eye Tracking
SMI Remote Eye Trackers are designed to support academic and professional research – on the screen, in the lab and in real-life locations.
Me and my colleagues are impressed with the SMI remote eye tracking system: Even when working outside of a traditional lab, the system shows reliable calibration or track performance. We travel around a lot with the system – on busses, ferries, air planes to schools and kindergartens. On-site, the system is easy to set-up and fully functional within 5 minutes.

Using real-time eye gaze information from an SMI RED 250, we incorporated user fixation data into our model of operator overload, which predicted the likelihood of an imminent error on a supervisory control task. This allowed us to provide real-time feedback to the user, based on their attention, in the form of a useful cue.

I successfully used an early release of the Digital Classroom to conduct reading experiments with children. Users of the upgraded launch product will benefit from the improved control it affords the researcher. In the past, multi-station experiments have meant going from PC to PC to say, start the experiment. Being able to control all aspects remotely means uniform experimental conditions and a more manageable research environment.

Since many of our participants are tested during the acute post-stroke phase, we need to be able to bring the eye tracker to the hospital and easily move it between clinical units to best accommodate our patients. The RED250mobile is basically no bigger than a stapler, so this can easily be accommodated. Despite the fact that many of our participants have age-related eye conditions and wear glasses, we’ve found that calibration has been accurate and easy to establish.

We chose REDnSystem for our marking research as it combines a small, portable format with a high level of robustness and an extra large tracking range. This enables us to send the system easily from one researcher to the next, or one town to the next. Because it does not require a particular screen, we can connect the eye tracker to a wide range of different screens, we do not have to carry around so much equipment, and we can even keep pace with the rapid developments in screen technology. The accompanying software suite is user-friendly and provides us with quick access to meaningful results.

The 120 Hz system is “in remarkably good agreement with the benchmark data” from 1000 Hz eye trackers. Statistical analyses using surrogate data indicate that saccades of all sizes above the micro-range (i.e. mean amplitude > 1°) can be identified reliably. The SMI-ETG 2W system might represent an alternative technology to desktop systems for high resolution eye-tracking research.

ASGM helped us to reduce analysis times from a month—with five team members analyzing the basic data—to just a couple weeks for a single graduate student. It gave us very reliable data and has been a great improvement for our research. I would recommend ASGM as an initial approach for anybody analyzing scan path data. It saved us time and money on the overall analysis of our project.

We are happy that the ICA, our patented physiological assessment of cognitive workload, was successfully integrated by our partner SensoMotoric Instruments. We think this joint work of SMI and EyeTracking Inc. will further enhance analysis options for research studies which aim to analyze cognitive workload levels.
We used SMI Eye Tracking Glasses together with Qualisys motion tracking to examine how predictive gaze information is conveyed between two humans during real-time social interactions. It was one of the first attempts to combine both kinematics and portable eye-tracking devices in a true interactive face-to-face paradigm. Simultaneous recording of the kinematics of arm, hand and eye movements of two participants allowed us to study both joint action and joint attention in a truly interactive manner.

The unique integration of eye tracking and VR is a game changer allowing unprecedented R&D solutions with consumer behavior insights. The portability of eye tracking solutions - in combination with brain data - gives a better understanding of the information people pick-up when they make decisions in their daily lives. This combined innovation allowed to develop my methodology to measure the gap between what people say or think they do and what their real actions are. I used this approach in my lab and field research on pilots, teachers, consumers and business executives.

With SMI Eye Tracking Glasses, we can reconstruct shoppers’ routes across the store and assess what they recall later about particular items on display. It is very important to us that for the shoppers its a completely realistic shopping experience, because the SMI glasses are completely unobtrusive and very light weight. We can look at the recordings individually, but we also aggregate the data. So they tell us exactly where shoppers’ behavior overlaps and where there are individual differences.
