What eye tracking delivers
Learning is a life-long process of personal growth and discovery. Obtaining new insights, skills and competencies manifests on several levels of human behavior, ranging from subtle changes in neural firing patterns to behavioral actions, including body, limb and eye movements.
Eye tracking provides insights in the proper interaction of sensory and cognitive-affective systems, for example during information uptake where attentional resources have to be regulated or during memory recall and action execution.
Modern eye tracking solutions for cognitive training and learning are versatile to be used in multi-station classroom setups and in real-world scenarios to –
- Assess individual learning strategies from single or multiple students with quantitative metrics delivered by eye tracking, physiological sensors and self-reports
- Identify learning deficits, and initiate data-based improvements of learning environments, instructional content and strategy
- Develop truly intelligent learning systems which assess personal mastery in conjunction with cognitive-affective states of any learner
I successfully used an early release of the Digital Classroom to conduct reading experiments with children. Users of the upgraded launch product will benefit from the improved control it affords the researcher. In the past, multi-station experiments have meant going from PC to PC to say, start the experiment. Being able to control all aspects remotely means uniform experimental conditions and a more manageable research environment.

Combining SMI's technology with our VR development software Vizard allows researchers and professionals to create VR applications with real-time gaze interaction in the HTC Vive. This instant user interaction, naturally triggered by the eye gaze, gives those involved in market research, sports training, behavioral research, neuroscience and many other fields an incredibly powerful and one-of-a-kind solution for studying how people view, navigate and interact with environments.
Using real-time eye gaze information from an SMI RED 250, we incorporated user fixation data into our model of operator overload, which predicted the likelihood of an imminent error on a supervisory control task. This allowed us to provide real-time feedback to the user, based on their attention, in the form of a useful cue.

Since many of our participants are tested during the acute post-stroke phase, we need to be able to bring the eye tracker to the hospital and easily move it between clinical units to best accommodate our patients.
