Many accidents and hazards in cars, planes, factory management, etc. are caused by fatigue or inadequate attention. Managing attention and fatigue usually requires a remote computer vision system as well as significant physiological and medical knowledge – both areas of expertise at SMI.
By working with several research institutes, automotive suppliers and automotive OEMs, SMI has developed prototypes of car cabin cameras, interior monitoring and driver assistance systems. These have found applications in driver and passenger monitoring, as well as in ergonomics, including:
- Airbag control
- Safety and passenger status
- Attention monitoring
- Fatigue and status monitoring
- Position convenience (based on eye position)
- Operator registration (identification)
- Access and user control and user setting adjustments
- Man-machine interaction
